University of Technology Sydney, Professor of Parasitology and Visiting Professor at the Technion, Michael Wallach gave an enlightening insight into the his research into parasites and the commercialisation of scientific research at the August supper meeting of the Technion Society of Australia.

His world leading research on Eimeria in chickens (the causative agent of the most economically important disease in chickens) resulted in his work in industrial science developing a vaccine. His ground breaking research has also covered studies in malaria, Leishmania and influenza.

Since stepping down as the inaugural Director of the UTS Institute for the Biotechnology of Infectious Diseases his research has focussed on developing immunological responses to seasonal and pandemic influenza.

Professor Wallach took the audience through a fascinating journey over several continents as he recounted the many years of research necessary to develop the vaccine, and in the process painted a picture of the challenges faced by all scientists as they struggle to find responses to disease and then overcome the hurdles necessary to finally bring a product to market.

In addition to his research Professor Wallach lectures both at UTS and the Technion on the commercialisation and entrepreneurship of biotechnology.

The supper was hosted by Lisa and Eduardo Yudowski.
